Bingo Player Loses Win Due to Land Based Problems
A bingo player in a Gala Bingo club at Wythenshaw in the UK recently lost out on her jackpot of £1000 due to the caller not hearing her claim before moving to the next number. By live bingo hall rules, if the caller moves to the next number before a claim is made, any claims that would have been legitimate on the last call are voided.
Elaine Prendergast, a 63-year-old long time bingo player, was extremely disappointed and refused to leave the bingo hall, staying until security removed her from the hall. She insists that she shouted a claim that was both loud and clear, well before the next number was called, but the caller did not hear her. The bingo steward and other players in the club back her on this claim, but the bingo protocols mean that she could not be awarded the prize once the next number was called.
Unfortunately for Ms. Prendergast, she will likely be unsuccessful in challenging the club via the Gambling Commission, as apparently no regulations were broken and the rules in such situations are quite clear. Once the next number is called, there is no going back.
